OAK publishes draft environmental report for proposed Terminal Modernization and Development Project
Public comment period runs through September 15
Oakland, Calif. – July 18, 2023: The Port of Oakland has passed a critical milestone in its proposed Terminal Modernization and Development Project for San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) with today’s release of a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR).
The Port, which owns and operates OAK, will host a series of public meetings during the extended 60-day public review and comment period in order to collect feedback from the community.
OAK is proposing to modernize Terminals 1 and 2 and construct a new terminal. The purpose of the proposed project is:
- To increase the number of passenger gates at the airport to meet increased demand
- Update OAK’s facilities to meet aviation industry standards, and
- Improve operational efficiency and safety for passengers and employees alike.
“The release of this draft Environmental Impact Report represents the Port of Oakland’s ongoing commitment to transparency, public service, and investment in San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport as a valuable asset of the region,” says Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We look forward to the next steps as we continue this environmental process. We appreciate our community’s continued interest and feedback in our efforts to introduce new and improved facilities to better meet the needs of the passengers who fly through OAK.”
The proposed project would involve the construction of a new 830,000-square-foot terminal building with connection to the existing Terminals 1 and 2 as well as the modernization of the present passenger facilities. A net total of up to 16 additional passenger gates would be added to meet increasing air travel demand.
Public meetings have been scheduled for August 15 and August 30 to share information on the Proposed Project and the Draft EIR and to receive comments on the Draft EIR.
Interested parties have until 5:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on September 15 to submit comments on the Draft EIR. To view the Draft EIR and for information on how to submit comments on the Draft EIR and participate in the public meetings, please visit here.
This is one of several opportunities for other government agencies, community organizations, and the public to provide input in the EIR process. When the Final EIR is complete, the Port’s Board of Commissioners will consider the EIR and determine if it was prepared in compliance with CEQA. The Board will decide if they have the information needed to make a decision regarding project approval.
