SOUTHWEST TO EXPAND HAWAII SERVICE AT OAKLAND AIRPORT

Nonstops to Kona and Lihue to Launch January 2020

Oakland, CA: (August 16, 2019) –  Southwest Airlines has announced that beginning January 2020, the airline will add two new long-haul destinations at San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) – Lihue, Kauai Island and Kona on the Island of Hawaii.

Service to Kona (KOA) will operate four times weekly on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Service to Lihue (LIH) is scheduled to operate three times weekly, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis, said, “OAK is incredibly pleased to join our partners at Southwest in offering this expanded service to the Hawaiian Islands. As the very first mainland airport to offer Southwest’s service to Hawaii, each evolution of this long-awaited service is a value added for our customers.”

In October 2017, Southwest shared an intention to begin the technical work to bring capabilities for Hawaii service, applied with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in January 2018, and publicly announced the carrier’s initial gateway airports and initial Hawaii airports in spring 2018.

Southwest Airlines first operated Hawaii service on March 17, 2019, from Oakland to Honolulu.
