To boost economic activity for city and region, Commissioners put “Oakland first” in “Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport”
Oakland, Calif. – July 24, 2025: The Port of Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to put Oakland first and officially changed the name of its airport to “Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport.” The name change is an effort to create awareness of its convenient location in the Bay Area and increase air travel into Oakland, which would boost economic activity for the city and region. The ordinance was officially adopted in a second reading at the Port’s July 24 Board meeting, and the new name goes into effect immediately.
“We are proud to be a central gateway to the Bay Area, and we’re proud to embrace a name that reflects both our local roots and regional reach,” said Craig Simon, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland.
The renaming places Oakland at the front of the OAK brand while informing out-of-state travelers that Oakland is a convenient and logical starting point for visiting the San Francisco Bay Area. International service at OAK continues to grow, with the recent launch of nonstop flights to Los Cabos and Zacatecas bringing the total number of Mexican destinations to seven. The new name will help this growth continue by increasing geographic awareness and boosting visibility on airline and travel booking sites.
The new name also coincides with major renovations at the airport’s retail spaces and amenities that modernize and elevate the customer experience. The launch of many Oakland- and East Bay-themed retail and restaurant concessions at OAK showcases the airport’s pride in its local businesses and products.
The airport’s three-letter code, OAK, will remain the same. The “I Fly OAK” logo also will not change.
