Port Board Approves Oakland Airport Name Change

To boost economic activity for city and region, Commissioners put “Oakland first” in Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport

Oakland, Calif. – July 10, 2025: The Port of Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to put Oakland first and change the official name of its airport to Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport. The move is designed to increase air travel into Oakland, which would bring a boost of economic activity to the city and region. This vote is for the first reading of an ordinance to adopt the new name, with the second and final vote scheduled for consideration at the Port’s July 24 Board meeting.

“We are proud to be a central gateway to the Bay Area, and we’re proud to embrace a name that reflects both our local roots and regional reach,” said Craig Simon, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland.

The current renaming places Oakland at the front of the OAK brand while informing travelers that Oakland is a convenient and logical starting point for travelers to the San Francisco Bay Area. The new name coincides with major renovations at the airport’s retail spaces and amenities that modernize and elevate the customer experience, and the launch of a host of Oakland- and East Bay-themed retail and restaurant concessions at OAK that showcase the airport’s pride in its local businesses and products.

OAK will remain the airport’s three-letter airport code, along with its “I Fly OAK” logo.
