Unpaid essential workers receive relief in the form of free meals from the airport
akland, Calif. – October 24, 2025: In response to the ongoing federal government shutdown, the Port of Oakland and Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK) are stepping up to support federal workers serving at the airport. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees at OAK are receiving complimentary meals during select shifts. This initiative reflects the airport’s commitment to supporting essential federal employees who continue to serve travelers despite the challenges posed by the shutdown.
“We are proud to support essential federal employees during this uncertain time,” said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Craig Simon. “We recognize the dedication of federal staff who are working tirelessly to keep our airport safe and operational. Providing meals is a small but meaningful way to show our appreciation and ensure they feel supported by their airport community.”
Relief efforts have already begun. Federal staff have/will receive meals on the following dates and times:
- Tuesday, October 21 – 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM (TSA only)
- Thursday, October 23 – 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
- Wednesday, October 29 – 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM
The meals are being provided in partnership with airport restaurant vendors, and the effort is funded by the Port. The Port and OAK plan to extend this relief effort should the government shutdown continue.
