OAK Reports 14% Passenger Increase in May

Airport Expects Surge in July 4th Holiday Traffic

Oakland, CA: (June 30, 2017) – Officials at San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport today released May traffic reports, which reveal passenger activity at the airport increased 14%, from 1,000,697 in May 2016, to 1,140,821 this year. The increase is based upon 12% more flight operations and 13.5% more seats.

As indicated by these strong traffic numbers, OAK is expected to record one of its busiest summer travel seasons in a decade.  International traffic volume increased 91% over last year, reflecting added flights and destinations by Norwegian and Southwest Airlines.

“For the last three and a half years, Oakland’s passenger volume has increased each month when compared to the year prior,” notes Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis. “An ever expanding roster of destinations is helping to fuel passenger traffic.  This growth represents the popularity of our air service as travelers are consistently choosing to fly the East Bay way in greater numbers.”

“Combined, strong employment, rising incomes and higher consumer confidence bode well for the travel industry, in particular this Independence Day weekend,” said Bill Sutherland, AAA senior vice president, Travel and Publishing. “A historic 44.2 million Americans will travel to celebrate our nation’s freedom this year, adding to an already bustling summer travel season.”

With summer underway, travelers are now also in the midst of the July 4th holiday weekend. San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport expects to be very busy for the duration of the extended Independence Day holiday travel period.  An estimated 250,000 passengers are anticipated over the six-day holiday period which spans from Friday, June 30th, through Wednesday, July 5th.

Airport officials recommend adding a little extra time to your schedule when arriving at the Airport for departing flights this summer.
